Apple Galette with Date Syrup and a Scoop of Ice Cream: Your New Go-To For Fruity Goodness

Apple Galette with Date Syrup tastes best when served warm and with a side of vanilla ice cream. It has the perfect ratio of fruit to dough crust and looks gorgeous, to boot. It has a touch of homemade elegance and beauty. Apple Galette is the perfect fresh and fruity treat!

Galettes are known for their free-form shape. They are often shaped in a circle and folded in at the edges. The best part about galettes is you can choose how much or how little of a crust you want.

Ingredients for A Delicious Apple Galette:

The ingredient list for Apple Galette with Date Syrup is super simple. In fact, you probably already have most of these ingredients in your house already. Here is everything you need to stock your kitchen for this recipe!

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Water
  • One Egg
  • Lemon Juice
  • Date Syrup
  • Three Apples

If you are not in the mood for apples, you can substitute them for pears. Also, if date syrup is not your thing, you can use honey instead. Feel free to mix and match with fruit and syrup combinations! If you make this with apples and honey, it is the perfect Jewish New Year dessert to make and serve for Rosh Hashanah.

Let’s Get Baking!

The process of making the dough is easy and does not require a lot of dishes. I mean, what more could you want in a baking recipe?! Minimal washing for later AND a delicious treat! Say less.

To get started with the baking, place the flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl and mix them together with a spoon. Next, add the butter and either work it in with your fingers, breaking the chunks into small pieces, or, use a fork. Both of these methods work well, so do whichever you prefer! You want the butter to be pearl-sized after this step.

Afterwards, add the water and start kneading the dough, just until it is all well-combined. Do NOT over knead, or else the dough will become sticky. Knead the dough into a ball and cover it with plastic wrap for 30 minutes and place it in the fridge.

How to Make Apple Roses:

While the dough is sitting in the fridge, it is time to start preparing your apples. To begin, thinly slice your apples. The best way to ensure the apples are sliced thinly and uniformly is by using a Mandoline kitchen slicer. Here is an article I saw with suggestions on which are best.

Once the apples are sliced, place them in a bowl and pour lemon juice on them. This way, the apples will not turn brown until you are done slicing. After this, place all the apple slices in a saucepan and add 3 tbsp of butter. Melt the butter and sugar on low heat and let the apples soften.

Rolled in Rough Quick Tip: For a faster version of softening your apples, microwave them for 45 seconds without the butter. After you microwave the apples, add the butter and sugar.

Now, you are ready to start making the roses! First, strain the apples. Then, take an apple slice and roll it up, cover it with another slice and roll it up again. Add as many slices as you like. In the pictures, I rolled twice and three times. If they are too long, cut them in half. Galettes can not hold long (high) roses.

Another little trick I use is a ramekin. As you make the roses, place them in a ramekin or a small pie pan so the roses hold their shape.

How to Assemble the Galette:

After 30 minutes in the fridge, take out the dough and divide it in two. Roll it out to a circle. Afterwards, spread the middle with date syrup and start to add the apple roses. Start in the middle and make your way outwards. Lastly, fold in the edge, brush with egg, and sprinkle with sugar.

Serve these beauties warm and add a scoop of your favorite ice cream. This time, I opted for vanilla and it was the perfect touch. If you are feeling ambitious, consider pairing the apple galette with homemade No-Churn Nutella Vanilla Ice Cream!
