Since you are probably spending a lot of time at home with the kids these days, I am sure you want a recipe to make with them that is enjoyable and simple. I am sure you are tired of the typical banana bread meal, so I have your delicious solution! My Cookie Chocolate Balls are so easy to make and are a great way to let the kids safely pitch in. Plus, you will end up with a dessert you love. It’s a win-win situation!
These Cookie Chocolate Balls are what started my love for baking. But now that I think of it, there is no baking involved in making these sweet treats. I guess that’s why from ages 6 to 9, I made them weekly while my parents were working. Now, as an adult, I have come to make these for a Mother’s Day brunch dessert. I love that I can pass my own childhood tradition to my children from them to enjoy.
So, let your kids make this treat, add their favorite sweet toppings, and watch their smiles as they surprise you with their masterpiece. You get to sit back, relax, and enjoy!
Cookie Chocolate Balls Ingredients:
I love this sweet dish because it is so easy to make! Not only is it ready in about 15 minutes, but it requires very little preparation. In fact, you probably have most of these ingredients in your kitchen already.
- Cookies! I love using Tea Biscuits by Kedem.
- Cocoa Powder
- Softened Butter
- Salt
- Fine Sugar
- Chopped Walnuts (Optional ingredient for an extra crunch)
- Rum Extract (Optional)
- Milk
- Toppings: Sprinkles, Coconut Flakes, Powdered Sugar, etc. Let your kids get creative here!
Variations and Substitutes:
- Instead of using the tea biscuits, you can use Oreos.
- Rather than adding walnuts, you can substitute peanuts or use both.
- You can swap milk for wine!
- Also, if regular milk is not your thing, you can use your favorite milk substitute, like almond or oat.
- For a dairy-free version, just use margarine.
Since these are bite-sized treats, you will not be able to stop at one. Before you know it, these cute balls will be finished!
How to Let Kids Make Cookie Chocolate Balls:
Simple! Prepare all the recipe ingredients ready for them in small bowls so they can feel like they are adding the ingredients. For older kids, teach them how to measure out the ingredient amount and have them add the ingredients accordingly. The most fun they will have with all the ingredients is smashing the cookies into smaller pieces. I love adding the cookie to a Ziploc bag and roll over the cookies with a rolling pin.
Once you have all your ingredients in the bowl, let them mix with a wooden spoon at first. Eventually, let their (clean) hands mix the ingredients all together.
To make the balls the same size, use a cookie scooper, but if you want to let your kids have some extra fun, just give them spoons and let them roll them into small balls. Next, have them roll the ball in a bowl of sprinkles, coconut flakes, or any toppings you like. Place the balls on a pretty plate or in mini cupcake liners for a more personal and festive presentation. When you and your kids do this, they will (almost) look too cute to eat.
I love that this recipe allows for my kids to get creative and I love watching them working in the kitchen. For me, this is a nice change. It is so fun to watch them pick out toppings, mix together the ingredients, and enjoy their fabulous creation. Plus, the no-bake aspect means you don’t have to worry about them burning your house down. (Just kidding…maybe).
Now, you and your kids are ready to get started. Soon, you will have your own mini chefs running around the house. Check out the official recipe below.
