What you need for grager cookies:

  • Unsalted butter or margarine
  • Sugar
  • Egg
  • Vanilla extract
  • All purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Water
  • Sprinkles

Cookie dough directions:

I used the Hamentashen dough recipe to make these cookies. They bake quicker than a Hamentashen so keep an eye on them in the oven.

Add the butter and sugar and mix on high for a couple of minutes until light and creamy. Scrapes the sides as needed.

Add the vanilla and egg and mix until well combined. Next, switch to your dough paddle and slowly add your flour and salt. Mix on low until the dough becomes a ball (scrape as needed).

Transfer the dough onto a bowl and place in the fridge for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes let the dough sit on the counter for five minutes and knead into a ball. Roll out the dough to 1/4 – 1/8 inch thickness, between two sheets of parchment paper.

Making the Grager cookie shapes:

What sparked these cookies was a flag cookie cutter I had. If you do not have one simply print this file and cut the shape out. Place it on top of you dough and use a sharp knife to cut out the shapes.

Once you have cut all your “flags”, place them on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Next, take a sharp knife and cut the inside of the flag to half of the cookies.

Preheat the oven to 350 F, bake until bottoms are browned, 25 minutes. Let cool completely. Once cooled, prepare your icing. Powdered sugar and a little water mixed together. Spread the icing on the bottom cookie, and place the cookie with the cutout on top. Let dry.

Once dry, add icing to the opening and add the sprinkles on top. Make sure to do this right away before the icing dries. With the left over icing decorate the rest of the cookie.
